About Jarryd

A Durban Wedding DJ
in the KZN Midlands

I am Jarryd Sunkel of KZN Wedding DJ — a Durban Wedding DJ specialising in Midlands weddings at venues like Brahman Hills, Haycroft Farm, Providence, Fordoun and Netherwood. Over 23 years I have built one of the leading names for weddings across KwaZulu-Natal.

Weddings are not like other events. Reading the room, adapting on the fly, staying on schedule and knowing when to shift the music matter more here than almost anywhere else. As a Midlands Wedding DJ I take the time to understand each couple's taste and the energy they want for their guests — I always ask couples to send through their favourite songs, so the playlist actually reflects their style.

My music library runs from current chart hits — Avicii, Flo Rida, David Guetta — through to the old sing-along classics that never fail on a dancefloor. Regular bookings at Brahman Hills, Netherwood Farm, Providence and Haycroft Farm mean a lot of repeat referrals from both the venues and the couples.

I am based in Durban and travel for weddings right across South Africa, including Cape Town and Johannesburg.

  • Over 1000 weddings played across KZN and South Africa
  • Professional wedding MC, sharpened through Toastmasters competitions
  • Recommended by Netherwood, Brahman Hills, Fordoun, Providence and Haycroft

Ceremony, canapés
& reception

Three separate systems, three different moods, one seamless day. Each part of your wedding gets its own sound — so the music never stops while the room turns around you.

Wedding Ceremony

Professional PA systems for wedding ceremonies anywhere in KZN. No electricity? No problem — battery-operated systems cater for forest and beach ceremonies. Choose your own processional, recessional and hymns, or leave the selection to me.

Pre-Drinks & Canapés

Also known as cocktail hour. A compact PA system and an easy-listening playlist hold the room while you and your photographer disappear for couple shots. The SPIN360 videobooth is a popular addition to this hour.

Wedding Reception

A dedicated reception PA system, curated easy-listening through dinner that lifts as the night goes on, and a professional wireless microphone for the speeches. Dancefloor lighting, moving heads and haze are included.

Lighting & Effects

Professional lighting
& cold sparks

Our lighting rig is built to lift the room, not just light it. DMX-controlled intelligent LED moving heads and parcans energise the dancefloor, while an LED bar washes the venue in a colour chosen to match your palette.

Effect lighting layered with haze adds the drama that makes photographs worth keeping. And for the first dance, non-flammable cold spark fountains turn "the lift" or "the dip" into the shot everyone remembers — safely, indoors, with no pyrotechnic licence required.

Wedding MC

KZN Wedding MC
Jarryd Sunkel

Your Wedding MC is one of the most important people at your reception. Many couples assume a confident friend can fill the role, but an experienced MC does far more than make announcements — a professional knows the full flow of a reception, works with your venue and suppliers, keeps guests informed and manages every formality, from welcoming guests and introducing the bridal party through to the speeches, the cake cutting and your first dance.

My own journey as an MC began in Toastmasters competitions, and 23 years of weddings have sharpened it since. Whether you need a Durban Wedding MC on the coast or a Midlands Wedding MC at Brahman Hills, Netherwood, Haycroft Farm, Fordoun or Providence, I work alongside your coordinator, photographer and videographer to keep the evening on track.

Booking your wedding DJ and MC as one person means nothing gets lost between them. The speeches start when they should, dinner lands hot, and the dancefloor opens at exactly the right moment.

The Setup

The setup behind
a full dancefloor

Good equipment sets the stage. What actually decides the night is 23 years of preparation and knowing how a specific room behaves. See the full technical setup.

JBL & RCF Audio

Sound sized to your room, whether that is a marquee at Providence or a stone hall at Brahman Hills.

Shure Wireless Microphones

Speeches that carry to the back table, and nobody tripping over a cable to give one.

Intelligent Moving Heads

Lighting programmed to each moment of the evening, not left on one setting all night.

Power Anywhere

Battery systems for forest, garden and beach ceremonies with no plug in sight.

Venue Uplighting

A colour wash on the walls, matched to your palette before the doors open.

Photobooth & Instant Prints

Guests print on the spot, sign the strip into your guestbook and pocket a copy.

Your Playlist, Not Mine

Send through your favourite songs. The consultation before the day shapes the rest.

A Tidy, Screened Booth

Cabling hidden behind the DJ screen, so the booth stays out of your photographs.

Every Midlands Venue

Nottingham Road, Balgowan, Curry’s Post, Howick, Lions River, Eston and the coast.

Common Questions

What couples ask
before booking

The questions that come up most often. If yours is not here, send it through — there is no such thing as a silly one.

Do you travel to the KZN Midlands and Nottingham Road?

Yes. I am based in Durban and in the Midlands most weekends — Nottingham Road, Balgowan, Curry’s Post, Howick and Lions River are regular ground. I also play Ballito and the North Coast, the South Coast, the Drakensberg and further afield across South Africa. Travel is quoted per booking, and venues more than 100km from Durban include accommodation for the DJ and assistant.

Can you DJ and MC the same wedding?

Yes, and most couples book both together. One supplier means nothing is lost in the handover between the DJ and the MC: the speeches start when they should, dinner lands hot and the dancefloor opens at the right moment. The Wedding MC page covers how the evening is run.

How far in advance should we book?

Bookings are open for 2026 through 2028. Peak-season Saturdays are the first to go, so send your date as soon as you have it — even if the rest of the planning is nowhere near settled.

What does a wedding DJ cost in KZN?

There is no single figure, because the ceremony, canapé and reception setup, the lighting, the travel and any photobooth all change the total. I do not publish package prices. Send your date, venue and rough guest count and you will get a written quote for exactly what your day needs, with nothing padded in.

Do you have backup equipment on the day?

Yes. Backup equipment travels to every wedding and stays on site for the whole event, so a failure on the night is an inconvenience rather than a silence.

Can you do a ceremony where there is no power?

Yes. Battery-powered PA systems cover forest, garden, farm and beach ceremonies with no electricity on site, including microphones for the officiant and your vows. Ceremony sound is covered here.

Are you licensed to play music at a wedding?

KZN Wedding DJ is registered with both SAMRO and SAMPRA, and the licences are available on request. It is worth asking any supplier the same question — playing recorded music at an event is a public performance, and it needs to be licensed.

Can we choose the music ourselves?

Your taste leads, always. Send through your favourite songs and anything you would rather never hear, and we shape the rest in a consultation before the day. If you want a starting point, there is a page of wedding song suggestions to work from.
